SPACE:
With Sujatha and Mr. Bow

1-2
Sujata and Mr. bow are curious about space and everything that is in it.
'I wish I wish I knew all about the stars in the sky' (left)
whooosh (right)

3-4
I am bodhi. I have been on this earth for many years. I can tell you all that you want to know.

5-6
"What is in space, what are stars made of?'
You can travel there with my leaves and together we can find out the answers.

7-8
This is a galaxy.
'There are so many stars in a galaxy!'
Yes! We live in the milky way galaxy.

9-10
Stars are big burning balls of fire.
'It looks like our Sun! Is the sun also a star?'
Yes, the sun is a star. Some stars are surrounded by planets.
A sun surrounded by planets is called a solar system.

11-12
'So our planet is part of the sun's solar system! What are the other planets'
'Mercury, Venus, earth, mars, jupiter, saturn, uranus, neptune.
Look! Some planets have rings on them! And they are so much bigger than earth!
The earth and the other planets go around the sun, spinning like tops.

13-14
The planets that are closer to the sun are very hot, but the ones that are far away are very cold.
'But earth is not too hot or cold!
Exactly. This is why there is life on earth.
'Thats why our planet is so green! because there are so many wonderful trees. And our planet also has water. See?'

15-16
This is the moon. We see it from earth.
I see the moon everyday!' It goes around the earth like the earth goes around the sun! Mr. bow and I think the moon is shy. Thats why we see her face only once a month.

17-18
Can I live in space Bodhi?
Some humans can visit space in a rocket. They are called astronauts.
'Neil armstrong was the first man in space! He landed on the moon!
Mr. Bow, did you know that the first animal in space was a dog? Mama told me!
That's right! The name of the first dog in space was Laika

19-20
Can things live on other planets
'Maybe. But the universe is so big that it will take us many years to know for sure.'

21-22 (back at the bodhi tree)
That was a wonderful adventure! I learnt so much! didn't you mr.bow?
I did too.
(hugging bodhi ) yaaawn!
It's late. You must be tired.
I'll come visit you again! Goodnight Bodhi!

23-24 - ACTIVITY!

Star Lamp :
You will need:
-Chart Paper
- Candle
- Thick pin
-Cellotape
-Scissors

Cut a rectangle from your chart paper.
Using a pin, make small holes all around the paper. Make sure that the
Roll is bigger than the candle.
Roll it to make a tube and stick it in place with cellotape.
Light a candle. Matches are dangerous, so ask for help.
Put the tube over the candle.
You now have your very own starry sky!

25
Things I found out!
Our solar system is in the milky way galaxy
The sun is a star
The earth is the third planet from the sun.
The planets apart from earth are -

EARTH:
With Tara and Samir

1-2
Tara and Samir are curious about the earth and everything on it.
“I wish I wish I knew all about the earth and what is inside it’
WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSH

3-4
I am bodhi. I have been on this earth for many years. I can tell you all that you want to know.

5-6
What is inside the earth? How does day turn into night?’
You can travel there with my leaves and together we can find out the answers.

7-8
The Earth is round and has four layers
‘Like an onion!’

9-10
Crust – though it is very deep, it is the thinnest layer. It is made up of rocks.
‘We live on this layer’
Mantle – This is the second layer.
‘It is very hot and gooey.’
This liquid is called magma
Outer Core – This is the third layer. It is also extremely hot and is made of melted metals.
Inner core – It is solid and really, really, really hot – hotter than the sun!

11-12
‘How come our earth looks so much more blue than green?’
That’s because most of the crust is covered in much more water and much less is land.
‘The blue are oceans, seas and rivers.’
‘The green and brown are from forests and deserts!’

13-14
‘But the surface of the crust does not look smooth!’
Yes, some places on the crust rise and form mountains of different sizes.
‘And dips to form valleys!’
In other places where the crust has cracks, it forces the magma to come out.
‘A volcano!’

15-16
There are layers of air that cover the earth.
‘This has all the gases we need to live’
‘Like oxygen!’
This layer is called Atmosphere.

17-18
‘Only half the earth can see the sun!’
Yes, it is day time only for half the earth and night for the rest.
‘Because the earth turns round and round’ (show her/him spinning round)
‘Different parts of the earth have day and night!’

19-20
‘Do you also notice the earth is tilted?’
Yes, the earth is a little tilted. This is why the poles of the earth receive less sunlight.
‘That’s why they are cold and have snow!’
‘That’s why the center is warmer also!’

21-22
From the earth, you can see the sun moves across the sky.
‘In the morning it is in the east’
‘In the afternoon it is the highest in the sky’
‘And in the evening it sets in the west’
And that’s how it becomes night. It’s getting late. You should be in bed.

(they are already asleep on leaf cloud)

goodnight.

23-24 - ACTIVITY!
Observing Day-Night

You will need:
-a ball
-a torch

25- Things you learned

AIR
With Manju and Manu

1-2
Manju and Manu loved watching the sky and how it changed everyday.
‘I wish I wish I wish I knew more about the atmosphere!’

3-4
I am bodhi. I have been on this earth for many years. I can tell you all that you want to know.

5-6
"Why is the sky blue? What are rainbows made of?'
You can travel there with my leaves and together we can find out the answers.

7-8
Do you know what the Atmosphere is?
‘It is layers of air that cover the earth!’
Yes, the layers are like blankets- like having many blankets on your bed, as the blankets get fewer it gets lighter.
‘So, as we go higher the air gets lighter!’

9-10
The Atmosphere has all the gases we need to live.
‘Like Oxygen!’
Yes, plants and animals also need it to live.
‘We take in air when we breathe.’

11-12
Some of the sun’s rays are harmful. The Atmosphere protects us from them.
‘And if there was no Atmosphere, the earth would be too warm!’

13-14
Sunlight makes beautiful effects when it passes through the atmosphere.
‘It is what makes the sky look blue’
‘Then how does the sky look pink, orange and red sometimes?’
Because the light falls on the dust and clouds in the air that make it these colours.

15-16
‘What are clouds made of?’
‘Tiny drops of water!’
Yes, that attach themselves to tiny bits of dust. The wind carries clouds across the sky. And when warm winds blow over heavy clouds, it rains.

17-18
‘Look a rainbow!’
When sunlight passes through the drops of rainwater, it forms a rainbow.
Can you name the colours?
‘Violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, red!’
You see rainbows during the Monsoon season.

19-20
‘I know all the seasons! Spring, summer
‘Monsoon winter!'

21-22
‘Wow, what a wonderful adventure!
‘I’ve learned so much!’
You’re welcome to visit me anytime!
‘bye Bodhiiii!’

23-24 – ACTIVITY

Name and color the rainbow in order.

25 - Things I learned
The earth is covered by a layer of air called atmosphere
It protects us from the harmful rays of the sun

HABITAT:
With salma and pappadam

1-2
Salma and Pappadam loved pretending to be animals from the wild.
‘I wish I wish I wish I could see these animals and where they live.’

3-4
I am bodhi. I have been on this earth for many years. I can tell you all that you want to know.

5-6
‘I want to see all the animals and where they live!’
You can travel there with my leaves and together we can find out the answers.

7-8
The earth has two poles.
‘It’s so cold and there is so much snow! Pappadam cannot live here. So who can?’
Some animals can take this extreme cold.
‘Look a polar bear! He has such a warm fluffy fur coat!
A polar bears’ coat is what keeps it warm in this weather.
‘What about penguins?’
Penguins live in the south pole. It is equally cold there. They have thick skin to keep them warm.

9-10
‘oof its so hot and sandy here! Pappadam definitely cannot live here’
This is a desert. There is very little water in a desert.
‘Camels live in deserts! But how do they live without water?
You see the camels hump? It can store water inside its hump so it can stay for many days without water.

11-12
Look at the forest! There are so many trees like you Bodhi!
A forest has many different types of trees. Some are tall like me, but there are also many smaller ones.
‘This looks like a nice place for animals to live. There is lots of water and many places to hide.’
The forest is full of many different animals.
Can you spot the tiger?

13-14
‘I see him! Look pappadam!
The tiger is the king of the jungle. It has black stripes on its body to help him hide in the jungle.
‘He looks like a big strong pappadam!
Yes tigers belong to the cat family.

15-16
We are so high in the mountains!’
Mountains are the tallest and oldest places on earth. Some mountains have snow on top.
The snow on top of the mountain melts to form rivers.
‘All rivers flow into the sea!'
“What is that?’
That is a yak. The yak lives high up in the mountains. It’s fur is so thick that it keeps it very warm, like a big thick blanket.

1 7-18
Look the ocean!
I think there are millions and millions of fish in there!
Yes there are. But the biggest one of all is there
‘Whaaat is thaaat?’
That is a blue whale. It is the biggest animal in the world.
‘Its much bigger than an elephant.’
Did you know the whale is not a fish,
even though it lives in the water?

19-20
What about smaller animals Bodhi?
There are many different kinds of insects and birds. Look there are so many in my tree!
They are all my friends so I am never alone.
(find insects and birds in tree)

21-22
So salma which is your favourite animal?
PAPPADAM!!!!
I have made so many new friends! Thank you Bodhi
It’s time for his dinner, I must go now.
Byee Bodhi.

25 Things I learned

WATER:
With Aadi and Macchi

1-2
Aadi wonders where machi where the rain comes from and where Macchi lives
‘I wish I wish I wish I knew where macchi lives’

3-4
I am bodhi. I have been on this earth for many years. I can tell you all that you want to know.

5-6
Where does the rain come from? Where does Macchi live?
You can travel there with my leaves and together we can find out the answers.

7-8
When the sun gets too hot, the water in the rivers and seas heat up.
This becomes water vapour.
‘Look its going into the sky!’
The process is called evaporation

9-10
It’s much colder here!
Because of the cold, the water droplets come together and begin to freeze.
‘Look they’re becoming clouds!’
This is called condensation

11-12
The wind blows the clouds across the sky.
When the air becomes warm..
‘The water droplets melt and fall as rain!’
That’s right.

13-14
The rain falls back into the earth.
‘Where does it all go?’
Most of it goes into the earth and it absorbs the rain
That’s where wells come from!’ But what about the rest?
Some of it falls back into the rivers and seas and lakes.

15-16
‘And then the same water gets heated up again and the whole thing keeps repeating.
Yes, it is called the water cycle.
‘That is why we don’t run out of water?’

17-18
All living things need water to survive.
There is only a limited amount of fresh water in the earth, so we should not waste it.
But the Oceans have so much water!

19-20
The water in the oceans is filled with salt and minerals.
‘It tastes salty! That’s why we cannot drink it’
Fish and other sea creatures can survive in the ocean.
‘Look Macchi, this is your home!’

(drops fish in sea)

Byee Macchi I’ll miss you!

21-22
I learnt so much today, and Macchi found his home! Thank you Bodhi.
You are welcome little Aadi. Are you going to get another fish?
No, I’ll visit macchi in the sea.
Bye Bodhi!

Lapse

Right.
So brief update-

1) Feedback from first client meeting -
  • issues with main character Bodhi being male, implications of 'reinforcing' a stereotype
  • suggestions in changing the content structure of the books - splitting the 5 topics, without a separate activity book
  • strong illustrative style
Some of the illustrations from our series -

Bodhi Flies Us To Space,
with Sujata and Mr Bow

Bodhi Explores The Earth,
with Aadi and Macchi

Bodhi Discovers the Atmosphere,
with Tara and Sameer

Bodhi And I Make New Friends,
with Salma and Pappadam

2) Changes we incorporated -
  • rethinking the form of our main character Bodhi
  • reworking the content structure for the books
  • re-looking at the narrative style, making the children observe more things and come to conclusions themselves
  • detailing and defining our illustrative style

TREE: Bodhi
No specific gender.
Fits well into the indian context of the bodhi tree being the tree of knowledge.
The leaves of the tree come and take the kids to the tree.
The tree is the instigator of logical thought.
The questions and answers are triggered and generated by the kids.

First two spreads - common for all books
aah! so curious what ees!
